Reading TIFF Tags

Now I want to present you the first results of this project. Those are the most obvious results I have found so far, but I have also some assumptions which I want to investigate further. But my biggest problem at the moment is the deciphering of the Panasonic RAW format. The current version of the M43RawAnalyzer is just crudely reading the values from predefined adresses inside the RAW files. But to access more data and to make the reading more robust and error prone it needs to understand TIFF tags. Those TIFF tags are also used in many other RAW formats. I have tried using this C# LibTiff library, but it does not work, because the RAW files are no TIFF, albeit they are using TIFF tags and are quite similar to TIFF files. So I will try to write a simple TIFF tag parser to be able to read more data from the RAW files.

My Assumptions

My main motivation is to get the aperture value and lens firmware version. I am not sure if distortion corrections values are independent of the aperture. I have seen one example where the correction values were different, but the camera and focal length were identical. And now I don’t know if the reason for this is a different aperture or a different lens firmware. Also I am more comfortable in interpreting my findings, when I am able to understand the RAW format better.

Olympus Distortion Correction Data

Additionally I am trying to find the location of the distortion correction data inside of the Olympus RAW files. I have three positions which look promising, but they are not constant. And I am suspecting this is because the data is inside of a TIFF tag.

I have first results in three areas and the results are derived from the data of the Results Spreadsheet:

Camera Constants

As described in detail by Andrew, one (the value 12) of the 16 values related to the distortion correction could be linked to the camera. I suggest it could be linked to the sensor, because for all 12 Megapixel sensors its 2500, for the 16 Megapixel G3, G5 and GH2 it’s 2860. The 16 Megapixel GX1 has the similar value 2886. Unfortunately, it appears that the latest model GH3 (also 16 Megapixel) has no constant value. But also all of my current samples are taken from the internet and the values could be related to a beta firmware.

The Future

My plan is to update the M43RawAnalyzer with TIFF tag support and then trying to collect more samples. Also I am searching for the location of the distortion correction information inside the Olympus RAW files. Unfortunately, I have to divide my time between this project and the improvements/completion of MirrorlessDB. So I cannot guarantee you lighting-fast progress.

While preparing a blog post about the electronic distortion and CA correction of recent mirrorless cameras in general and m43 in detail I found some interesting articles from people trying to reverse engineer those electronic corrections used by Micro Four Thirds (MFT).

What are those electronic corrections?

  • Part of the standard of Micro Four Thirds are electronic distortion and chromatic aberration (CA) corrections.
  • Most MFT lenses have it, only a small number of lenses do not utilize them.
  • The correction data is embedded in the raw file and used by Adobe Lightroom and Camera Raw, Silkypix, Olympus Studio 2.
  • The correction formula is currently unknown.

When looking at the reverse engineering work it appears only a few people are involved this. This blog post from “Matze” started it for Panasonic cameras, Raphaël Rigo built upon the results and since August 2012 Andrew Johnston is building a plugin for Bibble/AfterShotPro.

Here is the current state of the reverse engineering of the MFT electronic distortion and CA correction is (as far as I was able to find information for):

  • The location of the distortion correction data and possibly also the CA correction data is known for Panasonic raw (*.RW2) files (thanks to Matze and Raphaël).
  • It is currently not clear what the correct formula looks like, as Raphaël has proposed one, but Andrew Johnston “discovered that the algorithm is more complex than we thought, and seems to vary from lens to lens”.
  • The distortion correction data is dependent on the focal length. Images created with the same lens, but at different focal lengths contain different correction values.
  • For Olympus raw files (*.ORF) the location of the distortion correction data is not known and also it is unclear if the correction data is formatted similar to the Panasonic raw file.


M43RawAnalyzer

To aid these efforts I have created a program called M43RawAnalyzer, which is using the base algorithm of Raphaël ported from C to C#. The main purpose of this program is to extract the distortion correction information from Panasonic raw files to help to find the formula used. Maybe a pattern can be seen when more data is collected. To collect this data I have created a Google Spreadsheet. Everybody is invited to paste his results into the spreadsheet. I have initially populated it with data gathered from Photographyblog and from my personal files.

Goal

The goal of M43Analyzer is to gather data for all autofocus MFT lenses on Panasonic bodies. The more data the better. Maybe it is possible to see a pattern, which helps identify the algorithm(s). Everybody can let this program analyze his raw files and import the resulting data into the Google Docs Spreadsheet. However, if your “result.txt” file is multiple megabytes big, it is too big to be imported in the spreadsheet. So it would be best to just import data for lenses, which are not already in the Spreadsheet.

Usage

M43RawAnalyzer was just started
When you start the program the main window is shown.

  • First it is necessary to select a directory which contains Panasonic MFT RW2 files.
  • Check the checkbox “Analyze subdirectories”, if you want to analyze also the subdirectories.
  • When clicking on the “Analyze” button all RW2 files are analyzed.
  • A file named “result.txt” is created in the same directory as M43RawAnalyer.exe.

How To Insert The Data Into The Spreadsheet

  • Click on File|Import..
  • In the following dialog click “Choose File” to select the “result.txt” file created by M43RawAnalyzer.
  • Also click on “Append rows to current sheet”
  • Click on “Import” to start the import.

Result File Format

The result file has the following columns:
Camera The model of the camera used.
Lens The name of the lens used. If the name is only partly written in this column or completely garbage, than the offset of the lens name is different than in my samples. If you send me the file I can add this offset to M43RawAnalyzer. I suspect that different Firmware revisions produce a different offset.
FL The focal length used. This is important, because the correction data is dependent on the focal length.
n, sc, a, b, c The variables from Raphaël’s Algorithm.
n2, sc2, a2, b2, c2 The variables from Raphaël’s Algorithm, but calculated using a different byte order. Maybe it helps. If you do not know what byte order is, just ignore it.
0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 The raw distortion correction data from the Panasonic raw file.
Filename The filename. Used to distinguish different samples.

Initial Findings

For the G1, G2, G10, GF1, GF2, GF3, GF5 and GH1 the variable n is 2500. For the G3, G5, and GH2 it is 2860. For the GX1 it is 2886 and for the GH3 it appears to be random, but I suspect it is a result of the non-final Firmware which was used to create the raw files.

About M43RawAnalyzer

  • The program only reads from the raw files and is not altering them in any way.
  • The program should work with all Panasonic raw files (*.RW2), but it can happen that the lens names are not always shown correctly. I suspect this is firmware related. If you send me the file I can add this offset to M43RawAnalyzer.
  • M43RawAnalyzer is written in C# and is developed on Windows 7 (64bit). It should run on all Windows version, which support .NET 3.5. It is untested on Mono.
  • The source code is released on GitHub.

When looking for a new manual lens for your camera you have probably stumbled over some uncommon lens “manufacturers” like Samyang, Bower, Walimex, Falcon, etc. Those “manufacturers” are not all original equipment manufacturers (OEM). Most of them are just re-branding the lenses and selling them under their name. And in case of lenses by the korean manufacturer Samyang (English site, Polish site, Spanish site) this is quite interesting. Because Samyang lenses are not only available by a lot of resellers, but also by Samyang itself. This makes it more difficult to find reviews and other resources for those lenses, because those reviews are sometimes labelled with the name of a reseller and sometimes with the name of the OEM. Here at MirrorlessDB those reviews are all listed by the Samyang lens. An example for this is the Samyang 8mm f/2.8 ED AS IF UMC Fisheye.

There is a trick to get a kind of focus peaking with the current Olympus E-M5.

How to do it:

  1. Set the image quality to “RAW + JPEG”. The JPEG will be thrown away afterwards, so you can use the lowest quality setting to save space.
  2. Use the Art Filter “Key Line” (ART 11). The Live View will slow down a little bit, while this filter is active.
  3. Manual focus and look at the display. As you gradually change the focus you will see that different parts of the image are colored in black. Those black parts are the ones in focus!

Pansonic G5 and Olympus M.Zuiko 12-50mm


Two months ago the Panasonic DMC-G5 was announced/released. One of its new features is a so called “Function Lever”. This is a small lever located behind the G5’s shutter release and can be used to perform different functions, like exposure compensation or to zoom into an image when in playback mode. If a power zoom capable lens is attached it can also be used to control the zoom of the lens.

A few days ago on a company photo walk I met a collegue who happens to own a G5. While we were talking about our cameras (I own an E-M5) he wanted to test my Olympus 12-50mm lens on his G5. After some playing around we were curious and tested if the Function Lever of the G5 works with the Olympus 12-50. And it works! Of course only if Power Zoom is enabled on the lens. The interoparability between the two manufacturers is really cool.

And after some googling I found this video by the polish blog m43.eu showing both working together.

Some of you may wonder how complete the database behind this site is. At the moment there exist 63 properties for cameras and 62 properties for lenses. And of these 62 lens properties 20 are complete for all 91 (current) lenses. With cameras the database is more sparse. There only 12 properties are complete for all 41 (current) cameras. But this will change. Hard work is done to gather all the missing information and enter it into the database.

In May 2012 Sony announced its latest E mount lens, the Sony E 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 OSS LE. This lens is now the third 18-200mm lens for the E mount in 1.5 years. The other two lenses are the Sony E 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 OSS (announced 05/2010) and the Tamron 18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 Di III VC (announced 12/2011). However, looking at the properties of the lens it seems that Sony’s latest lens is just a rebranded version of the Tamron lens. Because when comparing the technical data of both lenses there are too many similarities. Not only are they identical in their key aspects, like focal length and aperture, but also in every other detail with the exception of their appearance.

Here it’s clearly visible that Sony’s new lens is identical in all properties with the Tamron lens. But this rebranding is not so strange, because both companies have a special relationship with each other. Sony owns 11% of Tamron.

Furthermore there are some people stating that compared to the new Sony LE/Tamron lens the old Sony 18 – 200 mm has better stabilisation and is better suited for video. (another link)
